BEDA #13 - Arr, I are pirate

Hello, bloggers. Day 13. Lets get on with it.

So, it's no news to some people all over the world of the problems that the Somali pirates cause and are causing right now. This was the latest topic on the subject:

Navy SEAL snipers on the fantail of a destroyer cut down three Somali pirates in a lifeboat and rescued an American sea captain on Easter Sunday. The surprise nighttime assault in choppy seas ended a five-day standoff between a team of rogue gunmen and the world's most powerful military.

Now, what I wanted to talk about is... The term "pirate". Pirates have always existed, and due to stories, legends and movies, I think we have a wrong idea when we think of them. Of the Somali pirates, I mean. Or at least I do. I'll explain.

This is Wikipedia's definition of Piracy:

Piracy is a war-like act committed by a nonstate actor, especially robbery or criminal violence committed at sea, on a river, or sometimes on shore, either from a vessel flying no national flag, or one flying a national flag but without authorization from a national authority. It does not normally include crimes on board a vessel among passengers or crew. The term has been used to refer to raids across land borders by nonstate actors.

This is what a Somali pirate looks like:

And though a Somali pirate looks like that guy on top, I cannot stop imagining this everytime I even listen to the word "pirate":

I imagine ye rum, ye mateys, ye eyepatch, ye wooden leg, a parrot screaming for crackers on ye shoulder and demanding ye gold! Does this happen to you? I just really can't see what harm a pirate does. Then people tell me: They kidnap people and demand millions of dollars for their return. And I respond with an oh.

I say television and movies has given us - or, once again, at least me - the wrong idea of a pirate!

"PIRATES!" they screamed.

Reality: an effing group of guys who want millions of dollars and don't get it in a cool way.

What I think: a group of guys who want gold and rum and has a smoking gorgeous captain on board stealing that same gold in a cool way.

Ah, world of motion pictures. Sometimes you confuse my brain.

See you guys tomorrow x
