Oscar Week: Precious

(Photo found here)

This is, with a doubt, a very emotional movie. It makes you question if there are actual mothers like the one played by Mo'Nique who are able to live such lives and treat their own children as if they were something other than human. It made me cry in various occasions, it made me incredulous, it made me feel such compassion towards the lead character played by Gabourey Sidibe.

Throughout it you encounter an irrecognizable Mariah Carey which wasn't very bad, even though she had a small role. But no, Ms. Carey, no more drunk speeches for you. At least in the Academy Awards.

It's most definitely a powerful, strong and affecting story. I thought the ending was very adequate and brave. One thing I didn't quite like, though, was the directing. Can't really explain it, but I think it was a bit of a downside. Even so, it has won many awards including one BAFTA and one Golden Globe (both for Best Supporting Actress for Mo'Nique).

Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director (Lee Daniels), Best Actress (Gabourey Sidibe), Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique), Best Writing/Adapted Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher), Best Film Editing (Joe Klotz).

Predictions: Sorry, guys, Best Picture will go to Avatar this year. Or Best Actress, although Gabourey definitely had an outstanding representation. I'm thinking there'll only be one Oscar going to Precious: Best Supporting Actress. In other awards, Mo'Nique has won this category 34 times. Will the gold Oscar be lucky number 35?

Next up: Avatar
